Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Incorporated (ZCCCIFI) President and RDC Economic Development Region 9 Chairman, Cholo Soliven yesterday cited the importance of a Regional Tourism plan for the  Department of Tourism Region 9 to get a good share of the national tourism budget.

Soliven said the DOT Region 9 budget for 2020 is very much affected because it was deferred for endorsement due to the failure of DOT 9 to present an updated Regional Tourism Development Plan and the budget presented was just for Tier 1, just barely enough for Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE).

He said for the entire Zamboanga Peninsula, the DOT9 Budget is only P7 million plus the amount for the Annual Investment Plan for 2020 which is too small.

“Remember, as early as 2016, the EDCOM has been issuing gentle reminders on the importance of the Regional Tourism roadmap," Soliven said.

However, no tourim plan was submitted by former DOT9 Regional Directors Antonio "Butch" Blanco and Karen Tiopes.

He also underscored the importance of the competitiveness ranking of the region and to identify opportunities for tourism growth.

"Tourism is supposedly considered as one of our major economic drivers for growth and development of the region so we need to harness the tourism focused eco system, through the Regional Tourism Plan where we can easily identify the connectivity and infrastructure concerns to propel tourism related much needed revenue centered intervention,” Soliven emphasized.

Soliven added that the deferment on the endorsement of the budget for the DOT9 will give time to the new Regional Director Myra Abubakar to craft her own programs and a comprehensive regional tourism roadmap. (SS)
