In a joint meeting Monday, the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) and the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) chaired by Mayor Beng Climaco resolved to strengthen barangay drug clearing operations in a bid to obtain a drug-free city.

This, as the local government fully supports President Duterte’s all-out war against illegal drugs through various initiatives and allocation of funds to assist and support anti-drug operations.

Mayor Climaco has tasked the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) led by Dr. Elmeir Apolinario to look into all possible measures to toughen the city’s support to agencies involved in anti-drug operations.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has recommended the implementation of a strict and coordinated approach on the drug problem through the legislation of a city ordinance, continuous support of the military and the police to PDEA’S anti-drug campaign, 100% subsidy by the local government unit to indigent patients at the Sonshine Drug Rehabilitation Center, orientation on drug clearing programs for barangay anti-drug abuse councils and police officers as well as the continuing education for anti-illegal drug operatives and investigators.

Meanwhile, to help minimize the commission of crimes, the Climaco led CPOC and CADAC asked the police to review areas with high incidents of crime and study measures how to curb the same.

According to Climaco, two additional police stations are set to be established to address the high number of crime incidents occurring in the jurisdictions of Police Stations 11 and 6.

For its part, the military through Joint Task Force Zamboanga, has committed to continue supporting the police and other law enforcement agencies in securing the city and its residents.

Other issues discussed during the joint meeting was the security preparations for the upcoming Zamboanga Hermosa Festival slated in October, the highlight of which will be the feast day of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar on October 12. (Sheila Covarrubias)
