Eighteen (18) trucks carrying more than 2,000 sacks of suspected smuggled rice were apprehended by authorities after passing by a police-military checkpoint at dawn yesterday.

Reports said that the convoy of trucks passed by a checkpoint along the Baliwasan Seaside area at 1:14 a.m.

During inspection, the drivers of the vehicles failed to submit documents supporting the importation of the cargo.

Authorities, composed of agents from the National Bureau of Investigation,(NBI) police and the military, held the trucks and turned them over later on to the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

Reports said that the shipment was imported by a local politician from a nearby province.  (Dan Toribio)
