Two improvised explosive devices (IED) were recovered by the military and militiamen in Barangay Kamamburingan, Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan last Sunday.

The explosives were discovered during mine clearing operations conducted by the Army’s 18th Infantry Battalion and the Barangay Peace-keeping Action Teams (BPAT) in the area.

The explosives were composed of two bottles filled with Ammonium Nitrate fuel oil (ANFO), a 1.5 meter long detonating cord, a blasting cap and two pressure-type switches.

The recent discovery followed a deadly bombing incident last July which killed at least eleven (11) people.  The bomb was reportedly intended for a parade in Lamitan city, an incident that could have resulted to more casualties.

The soldiers are thankful to BPAT members for their bravery and sincerity in ridding the province of explosives in line with maintaining peace and order.

They said that the timely discovery of the bombs certainly had prevented injury to residents of the province.

The 18th Infantry Battalion officers and personnel together with their BPAT counterparts are continuing to gather information in their mission to rid the country of explosives.  (Ely Dumaboc)
