The Regional Maritime Unit-9 (RMU-9) is intensifying its security and seaborne patrol operations in preparation for the forthcoming Fiesta Pilar and Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in October.

Sr. Supt. Jacob G. Macabali, RMU-9 chief, said that two RMU officers, 35 troopers and two speedboats have arrived to augment their existing forces.

Five (5) speedboats will be deployed in the channel of Zamboanga City and two (2) fully armed fast boats will be deployed along the coastline to conduct seaborne patrol operations.

“Ang mga troopers na ito ay padala ni Philippine National Police Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde for security capability build-up as Zamboanga Peninsula is a maritime region,” said Macabali.

Meanwhile, Macabali also said that the 902nd Maritime Station in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay has intercepted an unmarked  fishing boat during their series of anti-illegal fishing and anti-piracy and seaborne patrol operations.

The fishing boat reportedly engaged in illegal fishing activities in the coastal water of Buluan Ipil by using a trawl gear known as ‘hulbot-hulbot.’

The practice is banned under the Fishing Code  of the Philippines as it results to environmental destruction.

The unmarked fishing boat,  reportedly operated by Kashmir M. Vidal and Jasbe Cabato,  is now anchored at the Port of Ipil and a case for violation of the Fishery Code has been prepared by the Maritime Station against the violators. (Allen Abastillas)
