The Commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Joint Task Force- Sulu expressed optimism that they will finally get rid of the Abu Sayyaf by the end of this year.

“I am very optimistic na magawa po natin, basta ituloy lang natin ang ongoing operation natin to pressure (the) ASG and (with) the intervention of all sectors, local government units and local chief executives in the entire Sulu Province,” said Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Brig. Gen. Devino Rey Pabayo.

Pabayo made his statement during the 12th Westmincom Annniversary held at Camp Basilio Navarro in Upper Calarian last Friday.

The number of Abu Sayyaf bandits was initially estimated by Pabayo to be 350.

Pabayo, however, said that the number might have decreased to around 200 after the surrender of numerous bandits during the past months.

Pabayo said that they still have the edge over the Abu Sayyaf but added that troops must be cautious in their operation due to hostages who are still being held by the bandits.

“Troops just need to sustain our ongoing operation against the enemy in the Province of Sulu,” Pabayo said.  (Ely Dumaboc)
