Millions of pesos worth of suspected smuggled rice aboard three motor launches were seized by authorities during law enforcement operations off the coast of Zamboanga City last Saturday.

The three motor launches were identified as the MV Aizalyn 3, M/L Jasmin Michael, and the M/L Habiba.  The three are wooden hull vessels said to operate in Bongao, Tawi Tawi.

The vessels are reportedly loaded with an undetermined number of alleged smuggled rice placed in 50 kilogram sacks.

The sacks of rice were said to have originated from Malaysia and were being brought to Zamboanga City when they were apprehended by elements of the  Philippine Coast Guard, AFP and PNP Intelligence units, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency,  and Task Force Zamboanga

Authorities, who are reportedly guarding the cargo, escorted the vessels to a private wharf located at the Baliwasan Seaside.

The sacks were reportedly consigned to two prominent personalities linked to smuggling activities in Zamboanga City.

The cargo will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs District Collector in Zamboanga City.  (Ely Dumaboc)
