A male school teacher was released by his abductors yesterday after being kidnapped last Saturday in Patikul Municipality, Sulu Province.

The victim, Benjamin Ubaid, is a school teacher of the Camp Andres Elementary School in Barangay Tubig Putih, Luuk Municipality in Sulu.

Report also said that the teacher allegedly belongs to the LGBT community.

Ubaid was also reportedly the third member of the LGBT to have been kidnapped, prompting authorities to investigate if the Abu Sayyaf or other kidnap for ransom syndicates are now targeting members of the LGBT community.

Ubaid was questioned by authorities at his residence in Kasalamatan Village after being released in Barangay Danag, Patikul last Monday at around 6:30 pm.

His captors initially demanded a P1-million ransom which went down to P200,000 after negotiation.

Investigation disclosed that Ubaid went to Hawani Village in Barangay Latih, Patikul last Saturday to attend the prayer for his deceased brother.

After the prayer, Ubaid was observed to be texting and receiving a call from an unidentified person.

Later that day, the victim made a phone call to a co-teacher saying that he was being taken by his captors to an unknown location outside the Jolo town proper.

Ubaid told authorities that he was abducted in Barangay Danag in Patikul at around 2:30 pm, blindfolded and taken to Kalimayahan Village.

Authorities said that a kidnap for ransom ring might be targeting the homosexual members of the LGBT community.

Police are still investigating the involvement of the Abu Sayyaf group in the kidnapping incidents.
