A strong critic of corrupt politicians and businessmen in Isabela City, Basilan, was shot dead outside his residence at Bermuda Drive, Calle Visaya at past 7 p.m. last Wednesday night.

Quoting a police report, DZT correspondent Richard Falcatan said that Nicarter “Boy” Gonzalo , 55, was parking his motorcycle outside their house when two gunmen appeared and shot him from the back.

Gonzalo sustained two bullet wounds in the body and was taken to the Bascom Hospital where he died upon arrival.

Correspondent Falcatan said that Gonzalo, who was an employee of the Basilan Dockhandlers, was known as a member of a civil society organization and a speech writer of some provincial officials. He ran for councilor but lost in one of the past elections in Isabela City.

Falcatan said police investigators were looking into three angles behind the gunslaying: Work related; rivalry in money lending business and love triangle.
Falcatan added that Gonzalo had recently criticized his employer, the Basilan Dockhandlers, and posted in Facebook controversial pictures about the group.
