Operating units of the Philippine Coast Guard Zamboanga Station yesterday apprehended a motorlaunch loaded with an undetermined number of suspected smuggled rice.

LCDR Noriel Ramos, Coast Guard Zamboanga Station commander, said that his troops were conducting their routinary patrol off the coastline of Sulu when they intercepted M/L R.J Express, the vessel containing sacks of imported rice each weighing 25 kilos.

Based on investigation, the vessel reportedly departed from the municipality of Bulan, Sulu on the eve of November 10, 2018, before it was intercepted by elements of the MRRV 4408 and Intelligence counterparts.

Upon apprehension, the vessel was escorted towards the Zamboanga City pier wherein PCG Zamboanga has immediately coordinated with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Zamboanga port for the conduct of joint inventory and turn over of the confiscated smuggled goods.

Ramos said that they will continue the enforcement of the law of the seas and will continue to be partners with Customs authorities in the anti-smuggling campaign. (PCG Zamboanga)
