Around P7-million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes were seized by combined operatives aboard a vessel at the Zamboanga seaport last Monday.

Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-9 Information Officer, said that authorities confiscated  200 cases of banned tobacco products consisting of 150 cases of LS and 50 cases of Fort Cigarettes.

The cargo was concealed inside the cargo deck of the MV Maria Rebecca Montenegro, a steel hull cargo and passenger vessel which arrived from Sulu Province.

The contraband was believed to have come from Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia.

The operation was conducted by combined operatives of the Zamboanga Coast Guard, K9 Unit-SWM, AISS PAF, Zamboanga City  Police Office (ZCPO) Station 11, SWAT, Intelligence Section-ZCPO, PCTC and JITF.

The confiscated items were brought to the Coast Guard Zamboanga Station for temporary safekeeping prior to its  turn over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC).  (Dan Toribio)
