It was Mayor Sara Duterte’s personal endorsement and not Hugpong ng Pagbabago which endorsed the candidacy of Congressman Celso Lobregat.

This was the explanation given by First District Congressman Celso Lobregat to clarify doubts surrounding his endorsement by Davao Mayor and Presidential daughter Sara Duterte.

The said endorsement was surrounded by controversy after a statement by HNP Political Officer Jeffrey Tupas came out advising candidates not to assume that they had been endorsed by Mayor Sara Duterte unless “explicitly stated.”

The statement of Tupas followed a press conference called by Lobregat to announce his endorsement by Mayor Duterte at a Quezon City restaurant last week.  Lobregat also showed a photo of him and Mayor Duterte where both their hands were raised.

‘“ I don’t know how a photo can be misconstrued as an endorsement.  I believe until it was and explicitly stated that HNP or Mayor Sara has endorsed a candidate can we really say an endorsement has been made,”’ said Tupas in the story which came out in the Philippine News Agency website last Tuesday.

In an interview yesterday, Lobregat explained the circumstances behind Mayor Duterte’s endorsement of not only him but candidates present during the luncheon meeting.

“The intention there was really for Mayor Sara to raise our hands. When you raise somebody’s hands you are endorsing a candidate,” Lobregat said. He also stressed that it was not just a mere photo opportunity.

Members of the House of Representatives present  during the luncheon meeting were Divina Grace Yu of Zamboanga del Sur, Glona Labdlabad of Zamboanga del Norte, and Gustavo Tambunting of Parañaque.

Their hands were also raised by Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio, according to Congressman Lobregat.  (RGAAGo)
