The Barangay of Calarian, a barangay in the west coast which falls in the first congressional district, is the first barangay in Zamboanga City to acquire and operate its own fire truck.

Said fire truck, which costs over a million of pesos, was just delivered to the barangay last Sunday.

El King Omaga, Calarian punong barangay, disclosed that the fire truck is a penetrator-type surplus and is made in Japan which was purchased by the barangay at P1.3 million. The procurement of the fire truck was allocated from the barangay’s 5 percent Disaster Risk Reduction Management Fund BDRRMF).

According to Chairman Omaga, the barangay council decided to purchase a fire truck as the barangay usually experiences two to three fire incidents in a year.

“This fire truck is owned and operated by the barangay,” Omaga said.

The Barangay Fire Volunteer Brigade will operate the fire truck. This group is composed of trained barangay tanods and barangay staff.

Omaga said that with the new barangay-operated fire truck, they can now effectively assist the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) in cases of fire in their own community. (R.G. A A. Go)
