The Western Mindanao Command held military honors yesterday for five soldiers who were killed during an encounter between government troops and Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu province last November 16.

The ceremony was held inside the Edwin Andrews Airbase (EAAB) prior to a flight which brought the bodies to the Philippine Army’s 5th Division headquarters in Cauayan, Quezon Province.

The slain soldiers were identified as Cpl John Raphy Francisco, Cpl Renhart Macad, Cpl Bryan Apalin, Cpl Marlon Manuel and Pfc John Labbutan.

The five soldiers were killed during an encounter between personnel of the Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion and at least fifty  Abu Sayyaf bandits in Baragay Liang, Patikul, Sulu last Friday.

Twenty two  other soldiers were wounded in the gun battle.

The troops engaged in a firefight with the group of Abu Sayyaf sub- leader Aljar Yadah, said to hold at least six kidnap victims.  (Ely Dumaboc)
