Barangay chief killed, two hurt in Dapitan gun attack PDF Print E-mail

A barangay chairman of Lanao del Norte was killed, while his colleague and a civilian were wounded in a gun attack along Sunset Boulevard, Barangay Dawo, Dapitan City last Friday night.

A police report identified the fatality as Jason Cabahug, 34, married. He was the barangay chairman of San Miguel, Lala, Lanao del Norte. Wounded were Aramundo Palubon, 52, married, barangay chairman of Upper Sta. Cruz, Lanao del Norte and Elias Esmade, 30, single, of Dapitan City.

Police said the two barangay chairmen and some local government employees of Lala, Lanao del Norte were on educational tour in Dapitan City.

Around 7:30 p.m., the group had a dinner at B and B Restaurant located along Sunset Boulevard. After dinner, the two barangay chairmen got up and went to a nearby store to buy cigarettes where when two men armed with handguns appeared and opened fire on them.

The gunmen boarded a motorcycle that sped towards Barangay Paolo, Dapitan City.

The three victims sustained bullet wounds in the body and were taken to two separate hospitals. Cabahug was declared dead on arrival.

Recovered at the crime scene were14 spent shells and four slugs of .45 caliber pistol.

Police said it was Cabahug who was the target of the gun attack as he was a suspect in the killing of a certain Rogelio Lapuz, but the case was dismissed by the court. — Dan Toribio Jr. and Noning Antonio
