The Maritime Industry Authority IX has called for a meeting last September 20, 2011 of all stakeholders in the maritime industry to discuss the preparations for the Maritime Week celebration on September 26-30,2011.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Piracy - Orchestrating the Response” which is adopted from the theme of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s celebration of 2011 WorldMaritime Day. We are well aware that our country supplies a great many of the seafarersin the international seaborne trade and are therefore susceptible to piracy attacks hence the relevance of the theme.

A Walk at 7:OO a.m. in the vast area of the Zamboanga port will signal the beginning of a weeklong celebration of the Maritime Week. Simultaneously with the Walk are the display of all dressed ships at port and the blowing of ship horns.

The maritime group also stressed the importance of nurturing ecological awareness on the Zamboanguenos hence a Coastal Clean-Up is scheduled on the 28th of September at the following areas:

1. Boulevard Area - The responsibles are: PPA, MARINA, PCG, PNP-Maritime Command, Shipping Agencies and ZCSPC.
2. Paseo and Fort Pilar -The responsibles are: ZSCMST and ZMTCI

The Maritime Week is celebrated annually to enable the public to know about the activities of the maritime industry and the important role it plays in our economy.
