The Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP), now on its 14th year, will once again spearhead the search for the prestigious Peace Weaver Awards to significant individuals, organizations and communities in Zamboanga City and nearby provinces within the region to include Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The 12-member team of the screening committee recently decided to officially launch the campaign period on October 1-31, 2011. This will include the application and submission of the various requirements for the said award.

The Chairman of the Panel, Fr. Angel C. Calvo, CMF revealed the significance of recognizing individuals and groups as peace weaver awards.

“Peace Weaver has been an inspiration especially in recognizing icons of peace,” Calvo said. “It was not easy to identify awardees when it started in 1998.”

It was through the formation of the Screening Committee which served as the force in the conduct of the meaningful campaign for peace weavers.  It started only in Zamboanga City and through the years, it continued to expand and go beyond boundaries to include Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The IRSMP through Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) has already awarded 32 Peace Weavers (Individual Category) and Seven Peace Weavers for Group/Communities. On the other hand, Special Peace Citations were concurred to 11 individuals and five groups and communities.

The following were notable individuals and groups recognized as Peace Weavers for 1998:   Archbishop Francisco Cruces, Datu Unding Cuevas, Bishop Benjamin De Jesus, Hadji Jainuddin Nuño, Bishop Jose Ma. Querexeta, and Grand Mufti Ustadz Abdulgani L. Yusop, all posthumous; 1999 — the Villa Margarita Community of San Roque, Zamboanga City, Brig. Gen. Hernando Lopez and Ms. Mirriam “Dedette” L. Suacito; 2000 — Fr. Rhoel D. Gallardo, CMF (Posthumous), Imam Yacub Ismi, Com. Hja. Saphia Mustafa-Alraschid (Posthumous); 2001— Ping Tahsin Albar, Jose Ma. Liera Lucas, Alejandro Castaneda Lucas, Fr. Cirilo Nacorda, Dr. Alejandro Infante, Taluksangay Community, Hadji Datu Tabudjor Taupan and Bishop Antonio Ledesma; 2004 — Adela Romero and Prof. Datu Amilusin Jumaani (Posthumous) ; 2006 —   Archbishop Carmelo Morelos D.D., and Mr. James Ali T. Abdul; 2007-GUKOM SOG PITO KODOLUNGAN and Mayor Luis B. Biel II- former Isabela Mayor Basilan (Posthumous); 2008 —  Fr. Reynaldo Roda, OMI (Posthumous), Mr. Jemson Ismael (Posthumous), Ms. Merlie Mendoza, Ms. Esperanciya Hupida and Prof. Octavio Dinampo; 2009 —  Fr. Romeo P. Villanueva, OMI, Ustadz Abdulla Hamja Utoh (Posthumous), Euntes Asian Center and Catholic Relief Services- Mindanao regional Office; 2010- —  Hji. Ahmad W. Sakaluran (Posthumous), Ret. Gen. Mohammad Ben Dolorfino, AFP, Mr. Gualberto Largo, Tzu CHi Foundation Inc.. and World Vision

On the other end, Special Peace Citation Include:  2000 —  Atty. Jose Manuel Mamauag, 2004 —  Dr. Eldigario Gonzales, Tetuan Barangay Chairman Felipe Natividad, Sta. Maria Barangay Chairman Justo Lacandalo;  2006 — Mr. Rameer Tawasil (Culture and Arts); 2008 — Mrs. Eloisa Ruste (Education), Ayudahan Human Development Foundation Inc. National Sama Badjao Movement;  2009 —  Ateneo Peace and Culture Institute- Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Peace and Education), Center for Peace and Development-Western Mindanao State Unviersity (Peace and Education) and Mr. Vicente Arevalo (Media); 2010 — Dr. Norma Vecina- Education, Hon. Manuel Q. Banua — Governance, Prof. Norma Conti— Music, ABS-CBN Zamboanga — Media and Ms. Lorna Pulalon — Education (Posthumous).

The following served as the Guidelines and Mechanics for this year’s search for the 2011 Peace Weaver Awards. As to Who May Qualify — The award will be given to deserving individuals, groups and institutions in the City of Zamboanga and areas of Western Mindanao and Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Sulu. Information about the Award will be disseminated throughout the city and nearby areas of the region in cooperation with the partner institutions and affiliated networks.

A Search Committee composed of representatives from the Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP) and partner institutions shall function as the evaluation committee for nominations received.

For Qualifications: A nominee -Individual or Group (Community/Organization/ Institution) must be a Natural Born Filipino Citizen (Dead or Alive for Individual Category) and Organization or institutions must be operating for the past two years who – Demonstrated an outstanding personal record of involvement in projects or activities which are peace-building in nature or contribute to the attainment of peace, harmony and understanding in his/her organization or community; Performed an outstanding act which directly resulted in the development or promotion of peace, harmony and understanding amongst his/her peers or in his/her organization or community; By his/her known personal behavior or activities have achieved a reputation as a model of friendship, goodwill or communal/social solidarity.
The nominee may be nominated by any member of the organization or institution at least, as well as or by other appropriate authorities.

The following are the requirements for the application which includes- 1. Nomination Form Duly signed by nominator  should be accompanied by at least two testimonials or recommendation or endorsement letter written/prepared by independent parties (other than the persons making the nomination) and preferably supported by documentary evidences such as pictures, photocopies of certificates and certifications of activities, news paper articles and clippings of involvements within the organization, community, city, regionally, nationally and internationally.  Attach Nominee’s Curriculum Vitae (not more than three pages) or Organization/Institution Constitution and By-Laws.

The nomination documents should be submitted in two sets and be addressed to: The Screening Committee-Peace Weaver Awards, Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace at 2/F SLSI Bldg., San Jose Road, Zamboanga City. The application period will be from October 1- October 31, 2011. All nominations should be received by the Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace through Peace Advocates Zamboanga (Secretariat) on or before October 31, 2011. A prestigious Peace Weaver Trophy shall be given to the Awardee by the IRSMP during the Peace Weavers Awards Night in line with the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace.
