Abus attack Basilan town: 5 killed, 4 hurt PDF Print E-mail

An army enlisted man, a militiaman and three civilians were killed after Abu Sayyaf Group attacked Barangay Benembegan in Sumisip, Basilan yesterday morning.

The fatalities were identified as PFC. Calacapa, Sapatol Japarul, a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit, Teteng Japarul, Pong Japarul (both sons of Sapatol) and Dacul Hassim. A certain Rolly Hassim, also a CAFGU member, was wounded in the attack.

Four other civilians, including Hassim’s wife and children whose identities were not immediately known, were also wounded.

A military report disclosed that an armed group believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf Group led by Radzmir Temmeng Janatul harassed Barangay Benembengan, particularly at the houses of militiamen around 5 a.m.

Authorities also identified some of Janatul’s followers as Otto Bairang and Otto Akalun and a certain Kusain.
Upon learning of the attack, military forces and members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit rushed to the area, but they were ambushed by a blocking force of the ASG killing Calacap and Japarul.

The ASG bandits withdrew after the incident.
