Celso opens golf tourney, cosechas on Fiesta day 1 PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Celso Lobregat and District II Cong. Erbie Fabian Saturday morning spearheaded the opening of the 7th Mayor Celso Lobregat Golf tournament jointly initiated by the city government and the Zamboanga Golf Club in celebration of Fiesta Hermosa 2011.

The mayor likewise graced the 8th Cosechas de Zamboanga, an agri-trade fair organized by the City Agriculturist Office at the Veterans Memorial. Cosechas de Zamboanga showcases agricultural products from the city’s 6 agricultural districts and will run until October 15.
The Cosechas and the golf tournament are two of the featured opening salvo for the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2011, the city’s grandest celebration in honor of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar.

The 2-day golf tournament organized by the Zamboanga Golf Club headed by Chito Vasquez is being held at the Zamboanga Golf Country Club and will culminate today. Some 70 participants are vying for the title which will entitle prizes in the form of merchandise. 

A golfer himself, Mayor Lobregat together with Cong. Fabian, Councilor Nonong Guingona, Vasquez and tournament director Butch Blanco led in the ceremonial tee-off.
Meanwhile, at the ‘Cosechas’ opening, the mayor cited the essential role played by the farmers and fisher folk in the economic growth of the city and the country as a whole.  He said the 15-day agri-trade fair showcases the abundant and quality farm and fish products of Zamboanga.

The mayor was with Councilors Guingona and Myra Paz Abubakar and City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat in gracing the opening of the agri-trade fair.

The exhibitors in the Cosechas are farmers from the 6 agricultural districts from Tumaga, Ayala, Culianan, Manicahan, Curuan and Vitali.

Meanwhile, Mayor Lobregat also graced the opening and launching of the observance of the Elderly Filipino Week at the city coliseum in Tetuan.

The celebration is also one of the highlights of the 2010 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival and will be marked by series of activities that will culminate on Oct. 7.

Other activities during the first day of Fiesta Hermosa yesterday were the Boy Scout Council Fiesta Pilar Scout Rally, opening of the 2011 Cooperative Month celebration, Biocare 2011 Beauty and Health Festival, National Children’s Month celebration, Vamos a Zamboanga Safari photo contest, Cats and Dogs Day Fair, opening of art exhibit “Solamente Zamboanga”, opening of the 6th Inter-Barangay Cluster Cultural Presentation and the opening of the San Miguel Rocks Fiesta Hermosa “Rock the Fort”.  — Sheila Covarrubias
