Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday exhorted scouters under the Zamboanga Boy Scout Council to really put into practice the provisions in the Scout oath and law stressing that it will lead them to the right path not only to be good persons but better citizens.

“If you will only follow what is said in your Scout Oath and Scout Law, I’m sure that you will tread the right path not only to be a good person but a better citizen”, the mayor said in his message during the Fiesta Pilar Scout Rally organized by the BSP-Zamboanga City Council under scout executive Arthur Griño at the Paseo del Mar yesterday morning.

The activity formed part of the opening salvo of Fiesta Hermosa 2011 which includes an array of activities leading to October 12, the feast day of Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar. It was participated by kid scouts, cab scouts, Boy Scouts and Senior Scouts from the different BSP-Council districts in the city.

The Boy Scouts, Mayor Lobregat said is part of a time-honored organization that “envisions to develop morally straight, disciplined, concerned and self-reliant citizens”.
Through scouting, the boys are taught to love our God, our country and our fellowmen, he emphasized.

He lauded the conduct of the Scout Rally, saying it is one activity where the scouters can learn and discover worthwhile skills and talents that will make them better persons and betters leader someday.

Under the Scout Law, scouters are called to possess 12 virtues: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent.

“I love all the 12 virtues stated in your Scout Law (Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent). But next to being reverent to God, what I love the most is being Trustworthy through honesty. But next to being reverent to God, what I love the most is being Trustworthy through honesty”, the mayor, who graced the rally together with Councilor Nonong Guingona said.

Quoting an adage about honesty, the mayor urged the scouters to “be honest if others are not, be honest if others will not and be honest if others cannot”.
Aside from Griño, other scout officials present were Buth Alejabo and Allan Cajucom.

The mayor during the opening program was also presented with a neckerchief from the Asia Pacific Regional Jamboree by the BSP-Zamboanga Council. — Sheila Covarrubias
