It was an evening of elegant dresses and exquisite beauty as the city staged the 9th Mascota Night last Thursday with eight of the city’s top haute couturiers vying for top honors.

The annual competition is one of the most anticipated events during Fiesta Hermosa celebrations, showcasing the talents, craftsmanship and creativity of Zamboangueno designers in creating mascota, Zamboanga’s traditional wardrobe used during the Spanish era.

Dany Boy Tinay clinched the first prize, besting seven other designers with his black-and-mocha creation decked with gold, silver and black embellishments befitting its Oro, Plata, Mata name while Usni Sali’s white-and-blue piece dubbed Agua Bendita bagged second place.

Other participating haute couturiers were Joy Verar (Pluma), Monching Fernandez (Mascota de Amor, Jardin de las Flores), Olivia Sanson (Purita), Angelito Noynay (Corales), Neri Jaruda (Ojas) and Tita Digma (Maria Antonia) who each received P4,000 in consolation prizes.

Eight of the city’s most beautiful belles walked the ramp in equally stunning mascota creations: Colyn Ronned Coronada, Diane Angeles, Aikah Dindah, Janealle Andres, Rosiecar Espiritusantos, Alison Gail Maravilla, Margie Alatan and April May Short.

Tinay and Sali took home P20,000 and P10,000, respectively, along with trophies, flowers and sash for their models.

Also in attendance were Rep. Beng Climaco; Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar, Rey Candido, Rudy Lim, Benjamin Guingona III and Joana Mas; Dr. Roberto Torres who chaired the Board of Judges with Teresita Sebastian and Vita Guingona; department heads, military and police officials, balikbayans and other dignitaries. — Claudine Uniana
