Police Regional Office-9 Director Chief Supt. Elpidio Z. De Asis Jr. yesterday disclosed  that the whole situation in the region is normal and manageable.

De Asis said the situation in  Zamboanga Sibugay, particularly in the municipality of Payao is isolated one.

He explained that the joint operation of the police and military is “ordinary and routinary” which involves the enforcement of a lawful order for the arrest of Waning Abdulsalam and his men in Sitio Talaib, Barangay Labatan, Payao.

The gunbattle erupted because the wanted persons resisted arrest and fought back  with the government forces, De Asis revealed.
It was learned that the lawless group made Sitio Talaib their sanctuary and stronghold.         Abdulsalam and his group are wanted for kidnapping and extortion activities in the province.

De Asis said that Barangay Talaib is remote and the access road is rugged.

He explained that he has sought the support of the  military in arresting Abdussalam and his men because the area where the latter are hiding  is secluded and big with rugged terrain.

De Asis, who  presided a command conference at the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office in Ipil last  Tuesday, assured that the general situation in the region is peaceful.

He advised the people to stay calm but vigilant when they receive text messages on bombing or attack threat.

“All police troopers are in place in their areas of responsibility,” he said.  -- Allen Abastillas
