Two pirates and a soldier were killed in a sea gunbattle off Barangay Talabaan last Tuesday night.
Three other soldiers were wounded and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A police report disclosed that soldiers of the Task Force Zamboanga were on a seaborne patrol around 8 p.m. when they spotted armed men aboard another pumpboat heading for Sacol Island.

The report said that the armed men opened fire on the soldiers triggering an exchange of gunfire that lasted for several minutes resulting inthe death of two pirates.
Four soldiers identified as Cpl. Gerry Sakayan, PFC Alwin Piala, PFC Kaisar Sahibuddin and PFC Vincent Tomo were wounded in the gunbattle and were taken to the hospital. But Sakayan expired due to fatal bullet wounds in the body.

A military report said the gunmen were followers of Yusop Abdil, right hand of Imran Asgari, who was killed during the encounter with government troops in Sacol last month.

Meanwhile, authorities said the sea gunbattle was not related to the conflict in Basilan and Sibugay as the gunmen were not members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. — Dan Toribio Jr.
