ISABELA CITY, Basilan – Governor Jum Akbar yesterday expressed deep gratitude to Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Sec. Corazon Soliman for the release of P2 million to the provincial government.

Soliman handed over the P2 million in check to Akbar yesterday during the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) meeting which was also attended Local Government Sec. Jesse Robredo and President Adviser Teresita Quintos-Deles.

The funds is to be used to conduct livelihood trainings for the affected families, construction of additional Day Care Centers and rehabilitation and rebuilding of the affected comunities through the DSWD’s cash-for-work program.

Akbar said the financial assistance given by the DSWD is of great help to the provincial government in its bid to rehabilitate the affected communities in Al-Barka municipality.

Akbar said the provincial government has already released P510,175 financial assistance to the displaced families in Al-Barka while the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) contributed P50,000 and Al-Barka chipped in P25,000.

Basilan Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Lilia Bucoy reported during the PPOC meeting that there were nine barangays affected and 1,891 families with over 9,000 dependents displaced.

Al-Barka is a 6th class municipality comprising of 16 barangays with a population of 26,229 as of 2007 census.

The displaced families have sought refuge in their respective relatives staying in safe areas in Al-Barka town.

Akbar said the provincial government, through Bucoy’s office, has aleady conducted three relief operations, conducted feeding programs as well as stress debriefing.
