Despite the incidents in nearby Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay and in the city the past days, the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Regional Qualifying round held in Zamboanga City from October 27-30 turned out to be a huge success.

Mayor Celso Lobregat has expressed all out gratitude to the different agencies, organizations and individuals who partnered with the city government in organizing the newly revived sports competition for children aged 15 years and below in Zamboanga City.

Mayor Lobregat said despite the incidents and the short period of preparation, the competition went on without hassles.

Specifically, the mayor thanked the PSC represented by Commissioner Jolly Gomez for choosing Zamboanga to be the venue for the Batang Pinoy Mindanao-wide leg. He likewise lauded Elbert Atilano of the Universidad de Zamboanga for the gigantic role he played in putting the competition in order.  

The city government provided the logistics and through the City Sports Division provided the technical support to ensure the success of the Batang Pinoy.

The Batang Pinoy Mindanao-wide leg competition was participated by delegates from Dipolog City, Pagadian City, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Del Sur, Cagayan de Oro City, Gen.Santos City, Tangum, Tanggub, Misamis Oriental, Isabela City, Basilan, Davao City, Davao del Norte, Iligan City, Davao del Sur, Koronadal, Zamboanga Sibugay, and other parts of southern Philippines.

Zamboanga City, with 85 gold medals, 105 silvers and 61 bronzes bagged the championship title in the weeklong sports event. Runners-up were Davao City (36-31-47), Dipolog City (31-37-25), General Santos City (28-10-9) and Davao del Norte (28-8-7).

The Batang Pinoy is PSC’s comprehensive sports development program. It serves as the qualifier for athletes aspiring to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China.

The city government and the PSC represented by the mayor and Commissioner Gomez, respectively, signed last Oct. 6 a memorandum of agreement for the conduct of Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg in Zamboanga.

Commissioner Gomez said the PSC’s choice for Zamboanga to host the event was due to the city’s sports facilities of international standards. — Sheila Covarrubias
