Dr. Luningning Umar bested two other candidates to become the new president of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).

The WMSU Board of Regents (BOR) elected the former CHED commissioner as WMSU president during a votation last Tuesday in Manila.

Umar, according to insiders, mustered six out of nine votes beating rivals Dr. Milabel Ho and Dr. Marilou Elago.

The secret balloting was held at the office of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and BOR chair Patricia Licuanan.

Umar’s term of office already started on November 15, 2011 and will end on November 15, 2015.

Umar started as a clerk at the WMSU registrar’s office. She then became Instructor 1, then was elevated to Professor 2.

She was later appointed president of the Basilan State College and served in that capacity for eight years. She was later appointed CHED commissioner.
