A Zamboangueña topnotch national women’s billiard player won for the Philippines two gold medals in the 26th Southeast Asean Games Thursday in Indonesia.

She is Iris Rañola, a native born of Barangay Divisoria, Zamboanga City, who became the first double gold medal winner by besting Filipina pal and teammate Rubilen Amit, 7-2 in the finals of the women’s single 9-ball title, held in Jakabaring Billiard Arena in Palembang, Indonesia.

Though happy by her victory in the 9-ball title, Rañola said that she felt sad that it was at the expense of co-patriot Amit, a former world champion and five-time SEA Games champion.

Rañola, despite an earlier bout with dehydration that forced her to stay at her hotel room last week, topped the 8-ball event by dumping Vietnamese Huyan Thi Ngoc Huyen, 7-3, while Amit bested Singaporean Hoe Soe Shu Wang, 7-4 in the semi-final round.

Rañola beat Thailander Clomtiche Chitcham in the quarter finals, 7-2,  while Amit routed Thai Amorant Uan Dung, 7-0.

Double gold medalist Rañola is the daughter of Emilio Tan of the Tan’s clan of Divisioria and retired Public School  Teacher Mrs. Hideliza (Dely) Guevarra Tan of Sta. Maria, this City. — Vic P. Arevalo
