Economics educators from all over the country the other day highly commended Mayor Celso Lobregat for his remarkable fiscal management skills which they said is rooted on his comprehensive background on Economics.

Prof. Lorence Resurreccion, president of the National Council of Economics Educators (CECON), who led over a hundred of her members to Zamboanga City for the 15th National Conference over the weekend, was impressed at the achievements of the city government under the Lobregat leadership.

She stressed the mayor’s initiatives and innovations particularly in fiscal management are reflective of his proficiency in Economics being a holder of a degree in Economics.

Lobregat attained his degree in Economics with honors at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in 1970. The mayor was invited to grace CECON’s fellowship and cultural night held at the Social Hall of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) Friday night.

In his message before the over 100 CECON members, the mayor cited the significant linkage between education and the economic well-being of the citizens and the community, as he expounded on the Conference theme: “Economics of Education: Responding to the Challenges of Peace, Development and Environment in the 21st Century”.

He specifically cited the city’s efforts in education, which he said has far-reaching and lasting impact on the economy for it helps address the many dimensions of human development.

Since 2007, the city’s investment in education has reached over P700 million which include the construction and repair of school buildings, multi-purpose covered courts, fences, stages, road concreting, drainage systems, slope protection and rip rap projects, grant of allowances to teachers, provision of chairs and desks and many others.

Sound fiscal management has enabled the city government to strike a balance between the implementation of school buildings and other infrastructure project and the accelerated delivery of basic social services.

The mayor likewise in his message, made a thorough presentation about Zamboanga’s competitiveness and potentials, as he appealed the visiting Economics professors and students from all over the country to help spread the word about what truly Zamboanga is.

The mayor was accompanied by Councilors Nonong Guingona and Rudy Lim in gracing the CECON event. Prof. Bert Torres was also present.

Among the National CECON officials present were Resurreccion (St. Louie University-Baguio), Dr. Marie Marie France Nunez- Vice President Internal (Central Bicol State
