Luistro, Celso unveil P7.7M Talisayan school projects PDF Print E-mail

Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro flew in to Zamboanga City yesterday to grace the inauguration of city government-initiated projects implemented at the Talisayan Elementary School in the west coast.

Mayor Celso Lobregat personally invited Sec. Luistro to personally receive the projects citing its significance to the education department and most especially to the Talisayan Elementary School.

Talisayan ES is the site of the bloody incident last year when an ex-convict ran amuck and took students and teachers hostaged that eventually led to the death of 4 people lincluding a teacher and a student and wounded 6 others.

Turned over yesterday afternoon were the newly-constructed 2-storey 6 classroom building worth P5.4 million); rehabilitated and improved school fence covering 279 linear meters (P877T);  rehabilitated and improved  school building (P1.2 million) and rehabilitated and improved school fence  covering 47 linear meters (P122T).
Expected to attend the ceremony yesterday were members of the City Council, Department of Education officials, Talisayan Elementary School officials, teachers, students and parents and numerous others. Archbishop Romulo Valles officiated the blessing rites.

The unfortunate stabbing rampage in the school last year killed teacher Lorna Pulalon, grade 6 pupil Ces Orpiano and grandfather Ruben Flores who tried to rescue his grandson from the rampage.  Six others were wounded: Ludivina Balilo, a grade 5 teacher; Joshua Demco, 11 years old; Maria Lyka Basing, 12; Princess Briones, 12; Michaela Jacona, 12 and Dionie Torres, a grade 6 teacher.

Right after the incident, Mayor Lobregat, Cong. Beng Climaco and the DEPED have contributed resources to help the Talisayan Elementary School community cope with the incident.

Sec. Luistro personally came to the city then to look into the measures adopted by the different agencies concerned including stress debriefing sessions conducted to ease the trauma inflicted on the school community by the incident

Per request of the school officials, Mayor Lobregat has ordered the intensification of the implementation of the 3 projects in the Talisayan Elementary School, thus, the inauguration yesterday afternoon. — Sheila Covarrubias
