Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday played Sta. Clause to local athletes ages 13-15 as he distributed the city government’s cash incentives amounting to P187,700 to the medalists and their coaches in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg held October 27-30, 2011 at the JFE Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan, this city.

Lobregat said the city government was giving cash incentives of P1,000 for gold medal, P700 for silver and P500 for bronze.

“We are giving you this small amount to encourage you and other youths to engage and excel in sports,” Lobregat told the athletes, coaches and parents during the distribution of the cash incentives at City Hall conference room.

He also noted that most of the recipients are products of the city government’s annual sports program dubbed Summer Learn to Play a Sport. “I am happy that most of you are participants of our program every summer and we intend to continue it every year,” he said.

Among the topnotch Batang Pinoy Mindanao medalists was Maritoni Alysha Ledesma, who received P5,000 cash for the 5 gold medals she reaped from swimming for girls event. She is the daughter of George Ledesma, president of the Industrial Group of Zamboanga Inc.

The city’ weightlifting for girls’ and boys’ events also harvested a total of 8 gold medals, 4 golds from wrestling for girls, 12 golds from wrestling for boys, 4 golds from basketball boys, and 4 golds from table tennis boys. Other medalists were from judo, taekwondo, lawn tennis, athletics, chess, boxing, archery and arnis.

Meanwhile, all gold medalists were scheduled to leave last night for Naga City where they will represent not only Zamboanga City but the entire Mindanao in the national championship of Batang Pinoy Games slated for Dec. 10-13.

The city government will shoulder their transportation and food allowances prior to the actual games as the Philippine Sports Commission takes charge of all expenses only during the three-day games.
