Throngs of people gathered at Plaza Pershing and City Hall Friday night, as the city government kicked off Pascua na Zamboanga, highlighted by fireworks and the ceremonial switch on of the Christmas lights and other landmarks.

With the spectacular show of lights and decorations, City Hall is once again an icon of prosperity, joy and celebration and can be considered to have the most fantastic holiday display in this part of the country.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, who led the ceremonial switch on together with Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and other members of the City Council, said the city’s Christmas celebration is getting bigger and brighter than ever.

“Every year I would say the City Hall holiday display comes as a surprise”, the mayor said enthusiastically, as he politely oblige requests for photo ops by children and adults viewing the City Hall show of lights Friday  night.

This year, the holiday displays in City Hall, Paseo del Mar and Plaza Pershing reflects on the concept that Christmas is for children and that Christmas is a time for celebration—merry-making, gift-giving and sharing.

Bubble-making machines make the City Hall holiday display even more festive.    The snow-making machine on the other hand is the attraction at the Plaza Pershing Christmas display.

“We invite everyone from here and elsewhere to come to Zamboanga. This is how we celebrate Christmas in Zamboanga”, the mayor said stressing “for several years now we have been lighting our City Hall and every year the Christmas lights and trimmings get better and better”.

Meanwhile, a lantern parade participated by city government officials and employees ushered in Pascua na Zamboanga, a 15-day festival organized by the city government with the aim of spreading Yuletide joy and cheers.

The city workers converged at Ledesma Street and walked towards Plaza Pershing where the opening program, highlighted by the fireworks display and ceremonial switch of lights was held.

Adding color to the program was the inter-cluster chorale competition. Each cluster was composed of different city departments.

First place in the chorale competition was cluster 1 composed of personnel from the City Mayor’s Office, City Secretary’s Office and Sangguniang Panlungsod with a cash prize of P10,000; second placer was cluster 4 composed of the City Health office, City Human Resource Management Office, City Civil Registrar’s Office and Local School Board Teachers with a cash prize of P7,000 while the third place went to cluster 6 composed of the City Engineer’s Office and the City Administrator’s Office with a cash prize of P5,000.

Pascua na Zamboanga, organized by the City Mayor’s Office through the Tourism Division, is one of the most celebrated festivals in the city that makes the celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ even more meaningful.

Aside from Mayor Lobregat and Vice Mayor Iturralde, other officials present during the opening of the Christmas festival Friday were Councilors Rudy Lim, Percival Ramos, Eddie Saavedra, Myra Paz Abubakar, Lilia  Nuno, Abdurahman Nuno, Mike Alavar, Noning Biel, Rey Candido, VP Elago, Rogelio Valesco Jr., Jaime Cabato, Joana Mas and Rudy Bayot and many others. — Sheila Covarrubias
