Zambo City joins ‘Million Volunteer Run’ PDF Print E-mail

To show solidarity to the Red Cross movement, thousands of Zamboanguenos are expected to join the Million Volunteer Run set at 6am today from the grandstand to the Paseo del Mar.

Held simultaneously in key cities in the country, the Million Volunteer Run is organized by the Philippine Red Cross and intended to raise awareness on disaster risk reduction and raise funds for humanitarian activities.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, chairman of the Zamboanga Million Volunteer Run, Zamboanga Red Cross Administrator Vic Liozo Jr. and other Red Cross board officials will spearhead the event that will be participated by different agencies, organizations, business groups and concerned individuals.

Registration for each runner is P500 which entitles one with a million volunteer run race kit that includes a Red Cross 143 ID card with disaster preparedness guide, a t-shirt, whistle, race number and a Red Cross membership with accident insurance benefits. Schools are also participating in the noble event with a registration fee of P100 per student.

Initially, Liozo said almost 2,000 people have officially signed up for the million volunteer run and that more are expected to register until before the start of the event this morning.

He said all sectors specifically companies have been encouraged to join the Red Cross in making world history.

The advocacy hopes to muster one million volunteers throughout the Philippines running the 5-kilometer course.

Mayor Lobregat said the advocacy’s intention is not only to create awareness on the reduction of disaster risks but also to raise funds to build an army of 1+43 humanitarian soldiers in every barangay of the country who will respond to disasters, donate blood and alleviate human suffering as well as to train and equip the Red Cross 143 volunteers by way of disaster risk prevention. — Sheila Covarrubias
