An official of the Department of Education-9 is under investigation for allegedly orchestrating a anomalous transaction in the acquisition of books  that was done without undergoing proper bidding procedure.

The illegally acquired books were distributed to 36 schools of the two districts of Zamboanga City.

A reliable source disclosed that the books distributed to the two districts are worth P 19.8 million.

The source said the official and a cohort overpriced each book from the regular price of P300 to P480.

“The official and his partner earned almost  P9 million from kickbacks and commissions,” said the source.

The illegal deal was committed last year . It was discovered only this year when the books were distributed and an investigation is now underway.

The source lamented that while the city government and all local officials are helping the Department of Education in the construction of  school buildings  for the shelter and education of the children as wells as in the acquisition of computer laboratories, “this DepEd official is feasting on and stealing millions of  pesos from the people. .

The source called on Mayor Celso Lobregat and the City Council’s Committee on Education to help fasttrack the investigation and jail the erring DepEd official. — Allen Abastillas
