Mayor Celso Lobregat has extolled the officers and members of the Zamboanga City Social Welfare and Development Multi-Purpose Cooperative (ZAMSOWEDCO) for what he termed as good governance citing the coop’s significant growth not only in membership but in earnings and assets.

The mayor keynoted the blessing and inauguration of ZAMSOWEDCO’s new office at the Bangayan building at Gov. Vicente Alvarez St. over the weekend. Also present were Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar and City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo, Land Bank of the Philippines-9 representative Gilbert Rodriguez and representatives from the Cooperative Development Authority

Mayor Lobregat noted the significant growth achieved by the cooperative, heaed by Amelita Lachica, since its inception. From 100 members, the coop now has more than 700 members and from P5 million assets, the coop at present has over P25 million assets.

The mayor said the noteworthy achievement obtained by the ZAMSOWEDCO is despite the fact that most of the members are social workers whose hearts are into social services and sympathy. He stressed that the group was able to carry on the entrepreneurial side of the cooperative, the growth of which is dependent on the religiousness of the members on the repayment of loans.

“You have transcended significantly. Your efficiency in the collection of the payments of your loaned assets from your members showed that you have chosen what is right rather than what is popular,” Lobregat pointed out.

The chief executive also underscored that although cooperative groups are dependent on the cooperation of each member, it requires competence from its leaders and management teams.

“Competence is one of the 5Cs which I consider as the tenet of my administration,” he said, adding: “You should also have Conscience to know and determine what is right or wrong, Commitment and Consistency so that you will not only do what is right at some time but all the time and Courage to always do what is right and not just what is popular.”

Lobregat has been a prime supporter of the cooperative sector since he was Congressman of the lone district of Zamboanga, together with his mother-the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat. Their efforts led to the creation of the Banco Cooperativa de Zamboanga which will soon be operational at the Santa Cruz Commercial Complex. — City Hall PIO
