House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Beng Climaco the other day sought to set aside rumors that the Aquino administration is being mean to former president and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo on the hospital arrest issue.

“I don’t think it is degrading but they should also remember that utmost courtesy is given to the former president of the Philippines,” the District 1 Congresswoman said.
She said the government’s decision to put Arroyo under hospital arrest, instead of the family’s request for a house arrest has a precedent. Nevertheless, she said, the government prepared the facility well.

The Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMV), the government hospital where the former president would be transferred from the private-owned St. Luke’s Hospital is more accessible and can also best attend to the medical needs of the former president, Climaco said.

“I don’t think that the administration is being mean to former president GMA, because I think there was a precedent, the family chose to be under hospital arrest,” she said stressing anew that Mrs. Arroyo is given the utmost respect and courtesy in all transactions.

She added: “I don’t think it is degrading but they should also remember that utmost courtesy is given to the former president of the republic, and also she is not yet guilty so she is still going to face the trial and as always her rights should be respected”.

The Regional Trial Court Branch 112 in Pasay City has ordered GMA to be transferred to the VMMC for the continuation of her hospital arrest. The order came despite assertions by Mrs. Arroyo’s doctors from the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City that GMA still needs to stay at the posh hospital for further treatment and observation. — Marvin Segura
