Mayor Celso Lobregat on Monday appealed to residents of Zamboanga to share anything they can and help with the relief efforts in storm-hit areas in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City.

The mayor issued the appeal, as he convened the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) for an emergency meeting where he recommended the allocation of calamity funds to as the city government’s assistance to the thousands of victims of tropical storm Sendong in neighbouring cities and provinces in Mindanao.

He said Zamboanguenos should show their sympathies to those who were killed as well as displaced by the storm-spawned flooding. Thousands others remain missing as of press time.

Lobregat said used clothes, rice, noodles, slippers, blankets, kitchen utensils and wares and any other relief goods that may be of use to the storm victims will be a big help.

All donations can be coursed through the City Social Welfare Office (CSWDO) in Pettit Barracks or directly to Tzu Chi Foundation or Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) in La Purisima which acts as the consolidating point of all donations. The relief goods will be ferried by trucks to Cagayan de Oro for distribution Wednesday morning.

Residents can also donate in cash or in checks (most preferably)addressed to the local government unit concerned. The same can be coursed through the CSWDO or the ADZU or Tzu Chi.

Mayor Lobregat said the donations in checks can also be delivered to the LGU concerned by his representative together with the city government’s financial assistance.  He said he will task a representative from the mayor’s office to travel to Cagayan and Iligan to personally turn over the city’s assistance to Mayor Vicente Emano of CDO and Mayor Lawrence Cruz of Iligan.

Aside from the relief assistance, the city government through the CDRRMC has allocated a total of P2million as assistance to the victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Each city will get P1 million each through its local government unit.

The CDRRMC resolution will be forwarded to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for concurrence during its session today.
