Zambo LGU earmarks P2M for storm Sendong victims PDF Print E-mail

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) yesterday approved to allocate a total of P2 million as assistance to the thousands of victims of tropical storm Sendong that hit the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Sunday, Dec. 18.

This, based on recommendations of Mayor Celso Lobregat, who have expressed grave concern over the devastation wrought by the storm in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, the hardest hit areas. Lobregat has been in contact with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano and Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz since Sunday when the incident happened.

Based on the CDRRMC resolution, approved during the Council’s emergency meeting called by the mayor, each local government unit of Cagayan and Iligan will get P1 million each.

The financial assistance is in addition to the relief assistance that the mayor has also committed to send in cooperation with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) and Tzu Chi Foundation-Zamboanga.

The CDRRMC resolution, authored by Councilor Abdurahman Nuno, chair of the Council committee on disaster, will be forwarded to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for concurrence during its session today.  Nevertheless, Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde together with Councilors Nuno, Nonong Guingona-who is chairman of the Council committee on appropriations and Eddie Saavedra have assured that that majority will affirm the move.

Lobregat said the amount will be taken from the city’s calamity funds. He said he will task his representative to proceed to Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City to personally hand over the checks to Mayor Emano and Cruz, respectively.

As of 4am Monday, casualties in Cagayan de Oro reached 346 dead and 347 missing while 206 were reported dead in Iligan and 447 others missing based on records from the Philippine Red Cross. The number however was expected to have increased as of press time.

The mayor yesterday morning was prompted to call for the emergency meeting of the CDRRMC to tackle about assistance to the LGUs whose areas were hardest hit
by the storm as well as to discuss disaster preparedness issues.

Aside from the regular members of the CDRRMC, also present during the meeting yesterday were ADZU President Tony Moreno, Tzu Chi Zamboanga head Dr. Anton Lim, barangay chairmen from Sta. Catalina, Camino Nuevo, Mariki Rio Hondo, Tugbungan and other areas considered flood prone.

Tropical Storm Sendong with international name “Washi”, was said to have left the Philippine area of responsibility as of 10:30pm Dec. 18.

The city of Zamboanga, it is recalled has also responded to the call for help   when typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng hit Luzon two years ago. The city then allocated P1.5 million which was divided among 6 areas that included Marikina; Isabela City in Cagayan Valley; Dagupan City in Pangasinan; Trece Martires City in Cavite; and Laguna. Each LGU then received P250,000.

Last February 7, this year, the city government also approved the allocation ofP500, 000 as assistance to the thousands of victims of flash floods in Jolo. The amount was used to purchase rice, noodles, sardines, blankets, mosquito nets and cooking utensils and other wares and were delivered to Jolo the following day (Feb. 8) by Mayor Lobregat’s representatives headed by Executive Assistant on Muslim Affairs Amilpasa Bandaying. — Sheila Covarrubias
