Celso sends rep to deliver Zambo aid to CDO, Iligan PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday tasked his Chief Executive Assistant to fly to Cagayan de Oro City via Manila and later to Iligan City to personally turn over Zamboanga City government’s financial assistance of P2 million for victims of flashfloods spawned by tropical storm Sendong.

Mario Roca, City Hall’s chief executive assistant will turn over a P1 million check each to Mayor Vicente Emano of Cagayan de Oro City and Mayor Lawrence Cruz of Iligan City.  Each check is addressed to the local government units of CDO and Iligan and is intended to augment in the relief operations in the areas concerned, according to Lobregat.

Together with the city government’s financial aid, Roca will also turn over 3 to each of the LGUs of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan representing cash assistance totalling P400, 000 from 3 civic groups and a private individual.

These groups include the Progressive Mason Club-Zamboanga chapter, Amity Club-Zamboanga Chapter, Zamboanga Chinese Friendship Association and Lin Tick Kiong Temple contributing a total of P200, 000 (P100,00 each for CDO and Iligan); Zamboanga City GMA Fishing Corporation contributing a total of P100,000 (P50,000 each for CDO and Iligan) and Benny Yu contributing a total of P100,000 (P50,000 each for CDO and Iligan).

“We deeply express our concern, sympathies and condolences for the misfortune and tragedy that has struck your great city and y our great people”, Mayor Lobregat’s wrote with his own writing in his letter addressed each to Mayor Emano and Mayor Cruz.

The city’s P2million financial aid to the victims of Sendong in Cagayan de Oro is based on a recommendation of Mayor Lobregat to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) was concurred by the City Council in a resolution approved Tuesday.

The mayor’s recommendation was unanimously approved by the CDRRMC when it convened on an emergency meeting Monday.

Aside from the financial aid, the city government has also joined efforts with Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Tzu Chi Zamboanga and other non-government organizations in appealing for donations for clothing, blankets, water, canned goods, rice and other relief goods.

All donations are being consolidated at the ADZU gym and will be brought to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in bulk for distribution to flashflood victims. — Sheila Covarrubias
