House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Beng Climaco calls on all residents to fully support the Department of Health’s (DOH) APIR, also known as Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction campaign to prevent firecracker and gun-related incidents during the New Year revelry.

“Most that become victims are children who play with these firecrackers unsupervised. I hope our people will not anymore spend much on firecrackers as these had become hazardous not only to our health but to our environment. All we need to do is look for better alternatives that would allow us to welcome the New Year in a safe manner,” Cong. Climaco said.

The DOH has launched “APIR”, a campaign that promotes a firecracker-less and gun-less celebration of the New Year as a way to reduce injuries and accidents.
Climaco hopes that Zamboangueños will take the campaign seriously.

While other cities already implemented the no firecrackers policy during this celebration, the city of Zamboanga can also learn from these examples.

DOH records show that some 1,200 people, including children were victimized by firecracker and gun-related cases during the revelry last January 1st.

“We all have a responsibility to make sure that our city will have a peaceful celebration of the New Year. I call upon all Zamboangueños, let us reduce incidents of firecracker victims and likewise never use our guns for the revelry. Let us help keep the security measures in our city,” Cong. Climaco added. — Marvin Segura
