Dazzling fireworks lighted the sky above Paseo del Mar midnight December 31 (Saturday) ushering in the New Year in Zamboanga City.

A minute before the grand fireworks show, Mayor Celso Lobregat and some members of the City Council led in the countdown to 2012.

Throngs of people celebrated New Year at the Paseo. They queued the park as early as 5 pm in anticipation of the event which was pumped-up by live band performances from New Soul Band and the Exodus Band.

The pyrotechnics highlight is becoming a customary anticipation among residents and out-of-town visitors during New Year’s eve for the third year now.
The fireworks display this year was sponsored by generous individuals as the city government decided to call off the city government’s sponsorship in sympathy to the victims of tropical storm Sendong in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and other parts of the country.

Mayor Lobregat has written the pyrotechnics supplier informing about the decision and withdrawing the City Government’s payment for the fireworks show.
Some generous groups have volunteered to sponsor the fireworks display, if only to have the fireworks show, now on its 3rd year, push through.

“So the New Year countdown and grand fireworks display will go on, it will not be paid for by the city government but there have been generous sponsors who said we agree with your decision for the city government not to sponsor it but the show must go on,”the mayor declared in an interview two days before the New Year’s eve.

Thus, with the support of the community the tradition of welcoming the New Year with a blast lives on, kicking-off 2012 with cheers and appreciation.

Joining the mayor during the countdown and in celebrating the New Year at the Paseo del Mar were Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar, Rudy Lim, Percival Ramos and Rey Candido and Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo Valles.  — City Hall PIO
