The renewed campaign against parking law violators on the first day of its implementation January 2 netted almost a hundred violators.

The intensified implementation of Ordinance 248, otherwise known as Parking Law, is only one of the campaigns ordered by Mayor Celso Lobregat to be implemented effective on the first working day of the year. The other drives include anti-littering, anti-sidewalk vending as well as against violations on traffic rules.

Assistant City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario said almost a hundred violators were apprehended and penalized on the initial phase of the implementation of the drive against parking law violators Monday, January 2.

Majority of the violators were motorcyclists and were penalized for illegal parking or parking vehicles in no-parking zones.

The no-nonsense campaign against littering, parking and traffic violations was the result of a meeting called by Mayor Lobregat December 30 and
attended by City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. and his assistant Elmeir Apolinario, City Police OIC Director Col. Edwin de Ocampo, Task Force

Zamboanga representative LTC. Juanito Galindo, Councilors Percival Ramos and Rey Candido of the Council committee on markets and slaughterhouses, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Rey Gonzales, City Hall executive assistant Amilpasa Bandaying and other representatives from concerned agencies and groups.

“Let us start the year by doing things right with a sense of urgency”, Mayor Lobregat said, adopting the slogan coined by the Department of Education (DEPED) a year ago.

On Monday afternoon, Mayor Lobregat met with parking aides to personally direct them to implement the parking law to the letter. “Among the issue tackled aside from cleanliness is traffic issue and I have observed that among the contributors to the traffic problems is the violations on parking laws”.
He said illegally parked vehicles specifically parking in no-parking zones and double or triple parking in areas designated for one-side parking are contribute to traffic woes.

He stressed that parking aides aides should help in the proper implementation of the parking law otherwise he will be forced to terminate the services of those not supporting the drive.

Meanwhile, Apolinario also declared that they are pushing a renewed drive against illegal vendors in the commercial areas of the city especially in the market. Cleanliness, according to him, is one of the prime agenda of the campaign that the Mayor has directed.

On January 1st, Mayor Lobregat personally headed and supervised, together with City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. the massive cleanup drive at the main market, where tons of garbage were piled following the brisk and rush sales the night before.

Relatively, Apolinario also stated that they convened with the parking aides urging them to observe proper parking on their respective area of responsibility. This came about after observations that some parking aides are allowing double parking, resulting to traffic congestion.

To ensure compliance, parking aides who would violate the same shall not be allowed to collect parking fees from motorists.

Meanwhile, Apolinario also declared that they are pushing a renewed drive against illegal vendors in the commercial areas of the city especially in the market. Cleanliness, according to him, is one of the prime agenda of the campaign that inspired by Lobregat.

It can be recalled that on the first day of the 2012 Lobregat spearheaded a massive cleanliness drive at the city’s public market to lead by example as he urged all local government employees to do what is right with a sense of urgency. — City Hall PIO
