Two new buses—one a 30-seater unit and the other a 40-seater unit, were purchased by the city government for use during official functions as well as to help in tourism promotion.

The two vehicles were officially inaugurated and blessed yesterday morning following the First Friday mass attended by local government workers in City Hall.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and House Deputy Speaker Beng Climaco together with Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar and Nonong Guingona, City Hall chief executive assistant Mario Roca and other city officials led in the inauguration.  Monsignor Cris Manongas officiated the blessing rites.

The two buses cost over P8 million. The only bus that the city government uses at present was acquired during the time of the late Mayor Maria Clara

Lobregat. The new buses were delivered last month but the blessing was timed with the First Friday mass for the year, yesterday.

The purchase of the vehicles is authorized by the City Council and is included in the 2011 budget.

Mayor Lobregat said the buses will have many uses and these include bringing around out of town visitors who come to Zamboanga for educational tours or Lakbay Aral; mass transport of people for official functions and numerous other purposes.

Similar forms of transportation are being provided by other cities when Zamboanga City officials and employees or even private individuals visit other areas for official business. — Sheila Covarrubias
