Police Regional Office-9 bared yesterday a total of 441 police officers who were recruited for Zamboanga Peninsula in 2011 to fill in the vacuum left by those who retired from service, died in line of duty and terminated from service due felony conviction.

The recruitment process was carried out in two phases under the supervision of then Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Elpidio de Asis.

In phase 1, the national headquarters allotted 210 quota for the entire region and it was increased on the second phase to  231 recruits.

The Philippine National Police continues to initiate recruitment nationwide for young and qualified applicants to join the law enforcement organization tasked to maintain peace and order and combat criminalities and lawlessness in the country.

At present, PNP has a total of 140,000 policemen nationwide.

But the number is still insufficient considering the growing population which makes ratio of one policeman for every 1, 000 civilians, thus an additional police force is needed.

Meanwhile, PNP headquarters revealed that this year, a total of 6,000 new police officers are set to be recruited nationwide this coming June.

The number will be allocated to all regional offices depending on the quota that will be provided by the national headquarters for each regional office. — Noning R. Antonio
