Suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits set off an improvised bomb destroying a bridge in a remote village in Sulu last Saturday.

Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said the explosion took place around 10:40 p.m. in Barangay Pangdanon, Patikul, Sulu.

No one was reported injured.

Cabangbang said the explosion destroyed the bridge in Barangay Pangdanon, making it impassable to any type of vehicles.

The aim of the Abu Sayyaf bandits in bombing the bridge was to paralize the movement of troops in the province, Cabangbang said.

“Lawless elements in the area view bridges and roads as high speed avenues for security forces, instead of instruments for developments,” Cabangbang
said.

“They would want to isolate their areas from intrusion (by security forces),” he said.

Patikul serves as the turf of one-armed Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron, who is said to be the oldest among the remaining bandit leaders.
Efforts are being undertaken to repair the damaged bridge, Cabangbang said.
