Motorcycle thief dies in highway crash; conniving uncle arrested PDF Print E-mail

A suspected motorcycle thief was killed after the stolen motorcycle he was driving crashed on a street lamp post in Tigbalabag, this city last Wednesday morning.   

Killed was Nestor Tayona y Arañas, Jr., 22, single. He had a warrant of arrest for homicide and was a resident of Surabay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

MSgt. Romeo Tayona y Moreno, 52, a retired army soldier, was arrested in his house in Tagasilay during a follow-up operation few hours later for alleged
connivance with Nestor, his nephew.

A police report disclosed that Nestor boarded habal-habal motorcycle driven by Patricio Hanggaf in Surabay, Zamboanga Sibugay around 4:30 a.m. At a dimly lit part of the highway, Nestor pulled out a gun and announced a holdup.

Nestor seized the XRM motorcycle from Hanggaf and sped towards Zamboanga City.

The incident was reported to the police and a hot pursuit operation was mounted by men of the Surabay police station and Vitali Police Station.

Nestor was seen refilling the motorcycle’s gasoline tank in Tigbalabag but he sped away after he sensed that policemen were chasing him.

During the chase, Nestor lost control of the motorcycle’s steering bar and crashed on a street lamp post. He died on the spot.

Recovered from Nestor’s possession was a cellphone in which policemen saw Romeo’s text message asking for his nephew’s location.
Pretending as Nestor who was already dead, policemen replied to Romeo’s text message.

The lawmen proceeded to Tagasilay where Romeo was waiting for Nestor.  He was immediately arrested.
