House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Beng Climaco is positive that the proposed Persons with Disabilities Bill requiring the allocation of at least 1% of staff position for persons with disabilities will be approved by Congress on third and final reading soon.

The District I representative co-authored House Bill 5475 or an act expanding the positions reserved for persons with disability, amending for the purpose Republic Act 7277, as amended, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities.

Climaco said the proposed law will offer equal opportunities to persons with disabilities in employment. Likewise, she said, it hopes to offer benefits to PWDs as those enjoyed with usual employees.

The congresswoman’s other initiatives with PWDs is her provision of the PWD spa at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office in Pettit Barracks.

The said project is under construction and intends to augment income of PWDs.

House Bill 5475 was approved on first and second reading in the House in 2011 and is awaiting deliberations for third and final reading on the floor. — Marvin Segura
