Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn T. Uy,  chairperson of the Regional Development  Council-9, disclosed Thursday that there should be safety measures in the proposed coal fired power plant at the Zamboanga Ecozone in San Ramon to ensure the protection of the environment.

Uy said a coal plant can hazardous to the environment if not properly managed and maintained.

On the other hand, Uy said that under her leadership as RDC-9 chairperson,  there is an ongoing study on how to use alternative power sources like biogas  and solar energy.

She explained that the two sources of electricity are now used worldwide because it is safe to the health and environment.

Uy said that with what happened in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City where many people died and billions of properties destroyed by Typhoon Sendong,  the RDC-9  has advised all local government units from cities, provinces, municipalities and barangays to plant trees to protect and preserve the environment and the development of solid waste management. — Allen Abastillas
