Some 500 people from 72 barangays in Zamboanga City received Friday food packages from the Metrobank Group of Companies through the GT-Metro Foundation and the Metro Bank Foundation Inc.

The turnover was held at the Tetuan Elementary School.

This activity called “Bags of Blessing”, was initiated by the chairman of the Metrobank Group Dr. George S.K. Ty and started since last year.

“This activity aims to bring more relevance to the celebration of Chinese New Year and part of Dr. Ty philanthropic commitment to give back to the society,” sid Metrobank Zamboanga Branch Head Ma. Lorna A. Wee.

Each bag contains 10 kilos of rice, 1 bottle of cooking oil, 1 can condensed milk, 3 cans sardines, 3 cans of pork and beans, 3 cans of corned beef, 2 packs pancit canton, 2 packs noodles, 1 kilo sugar, 1 pack of coffee and 1 Oishi snack pack for the children.

According to Ms. Wee, this is a weeklong activity with simultaneous distribution in Manila. There are a total of 20 distribution areas nationwide—  six in National Capital Region and 14 in other cities and Zamboanga City is lucky for being one of the recipients, Wee added.

This endeavor is being held in close coordination with the DSWD which determined the names of the beneficiaries through the “National Household Targeting System (NHTS).

Wee thanked the city government of Zamboanga and CSWD officer Francisco Barredo for granting the opportunity to help the poor..She also commended the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines for securing the area. — Albert Luna
