Former CHO head Apolinario passes away PDF Print E-mail

Former City Health Officer Dr. Efren M. Apolinario passed away Thursday, January 26, due to cardiac arrest resulting from myocardial infraction.He was 74 years old.

A native of Barangay Cabaluay, Dr. Apolinario dedicated 34 years of his life to the government service starting off as a resident physician practicing internal medicine, barely a few months after his graduation in 1968 until his retirement in 2002 as Assistant City Health Officer.

He first joined the Zamboanga General Hospital (now Zamboanga City Medical Center) as a resident physician from 1968 to 1972 and became medical officer at the City Health Office from 1972 to 1976 and later at the Regional health Office from 1976 to 1983. From 1984 to 1988 he was senior medical officer at the CHO, promoted to Assistant Department Head 1 from 1988 to 1989 and on July 1, 1989 promoted further to Assistant Department Head II, a position he held until December 31 the same year. He moved to the Department of Health as City Health Officer 1 from 1990 to 1993 and later returned to CHO as assistant department head until his retirement in 2002. 

The late Apolinario finished high school at the Zamboanga AE Colleges, took up Pre-Med at the University of Sto. Tomas and attained his doctoral degree from the School of Medicine at the Southwestern University in 1968.

Dr. Apolinario is survived by wife Evangeline Emperio and children Elmeir Apolinario who is the Assistant City Administrator; Joyce Glenda Apolinario-Tan – administrative Officer V at the Commission on Audit Regional Office-9; Ruth Maria Lourdes Apolinario-Vesagas, a bookkeeper and presently residing in Cagayan de Oro; Efren Apolinario II, a navigational officer in Europe; Ethel Apolinario- Medallo, a secondary school teacher at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School and Ellery Ivan Apolinario, now a Level 3 Medical Student at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University; in-laws, grandchildren, siblings and other relatives.

His body lies in state at Chapel A in La Merced Memorial Homes at Gov. Alvarez St. Interment will be tomorrow, January 31 at the Baliwasan Catholic Cemetery along San Jose Road, after the 9am burial mass at the St. Joseph Parish Church. — Sheila Covarrubias
