Some 70 English teachers of secondary schools attended a two-day seminar with the theme “Enhancing Reading Instruction for Big Classes” held January 27-28, 2012 at the Crystal Ballroom of Grand Astoria Hotel.

The seminar was a project of Christine Guinacaran, Master Teacher of the Zamboanga City High School Main and alumna of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) which made her eligible to compete for a small grant from the International Research and Exchange Commission (IREX) to improve secondary education in this part of the region.

Guinacaran said the seminar was an inservice training program for the English teachers of ZCHS Main with other invited teachers from the City Schools Division like the Tagasilay National High School, Zamboanga National High School West, Ayala National High School and Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial National High School.

The topics discussed during the the seminar were: “Sustaining Students’ Interest in Reading in a Class of More than 50 Students” by Dr. Lolita Sy; “Current Trends in Teaching Reading” by Dr. Natividad, FSIC and “Constructing Reliable But Enjoyable Reading Tests” by Dr. Jaime Jalon.
